St. Barnabas Health System Elects Board of Trustees
Gibsonia, Pa. - Feb. 8, 2005 - St. Barnabas Health System has elected its Board of
Trustees for 2005. The trustees represent a combined 118 years of service and are dedicated
to furthering the mission of St. Barnabas: to provide quality care to those in need regardless
of their ability to pay. Re-elected for a one-year term were:
- John C. Curran, chairman, of Canonsburg. A member of the board of trustees since 1986,
Curran was elected to treasurer in 1993 and president in 2001. He is a former vice president
of Mellon Bank and former president of Mellon Bank of Maryland.
- John A. Howell III, vice chairman, of Ross Township. Howell is the retired vice
president and general manager of WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh and its affiliates, WJAC-TV in
Johnstown and WTOV-TV in Steubenville, Ohio. He has been a member of the board of
trustees since 1992.
- John S. Turnbull, treasurer, of Hampton Township. A trustee since 1989, Turnbull is
a retired vice president of Daniell-Sapp-Boorn Associates in Pittsburgh. He serves on
the PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® committee and the St. Barnabas Charitable Foundation Community
Advisory Committee.
- William V. Day, secretary, of Richland Township. Day came to St. Barnabas in 1967 as a manag
ement consultant. In 1978 he became the third president in St. Barnabas' history, which dates
back to 1900. Day has been responsible for the tremendous growth of St. Barnabas Health System,
taking it from a 63-bed nursing home to a health system that serves more than 350 independent
retirees, 300 nursing patients, dozens of assisted living residents, and thousands of outpatient
customers.
- Joseph C. Scaletta of Pine Township. President of C.U.E. Inc. of Cranberry Township,
Scaletta begins his sixth term on the board of trustees. He has been instrumental in the
fund-raising success of the St. Barnabas Charitable Golf Tournament and is also a member of the
St. Barnabas Charitable Foundation Community Advisory Committee.
- Thomas M. Schmidt of Shadyside. A trustee since 1972, Schmidt is the retired vice
president and counsel for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Pittsburgh. His
expertise has enhanced the beautiful natural settings of the St. Barnabas campuses.
- David L. Wohleber of Bethel Park. Wohleber is Executive Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer of Eat'n Park Hospitality Group Inc. He was first elected to the
Board of Trustees in 2003.
The core group of trustees also serve as trustees on St. Barnabas Health System's four
subsidiary corporations. Two of the corporations, St. Barnabas Medical Center and St.
Barnabas Nursing Home, have an additional trustee providing guidance. Those trustees are:
- Douglas W. Day of Richland Township. A senior vice president of St. Barnabas Health
System and administrative director of St. Barnabas Medical Center, Day serves as a member
of the Board of Trustees for St. Barnabas Medical Center. Day has been with St. Barnabas
Health System since 1987 and was elected a trustee in 2002.
- Karen Tabacchi of Butler. A senior vice president of St. Barnabas Health System and
administrator of St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Tabacchi serves as a member of the Board of
Trustees for St. Barnabas Nursing Home. A registered nurse, Tabacchi has been with St.
Barnabas Health System since 1987 and was elected a trustee in 2002.
