Kent Tekulve to Participate in St. Barnabas Golf Open
Proceeds benefit St. Barnabas Free Care Fund

Gibsonia, Pa. - May 14, 2008 - Kent Tekulve, best remembered for pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1979 World Series, will be the celebrity golfer as St. Barnabas Charities hosts its 21st annual Charitable Golf Open on Monday, June 2 at Butler Country Club.

The fund-raising event's morning field will tee off at 7:45 a.m., following a continental breakfast. The afternoon field, in which Tekulve will participate, will tee off at 12:45 p.m. The cost to golf in either field is $375 and includes 18 holes of golf, use of carts, lunch, course beverages, unlimited range balls, a cocktail reception and awards dinner.

Tekulve, or "Teke" as he is known, graduated from Marietta College in 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree in education and math before beginning his professional baseball career. The right-handed pitcher signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Pirates on July 16, 1969. He spent 16 years (1974-89) in the majors with the Pirates, Phyllis and Reds. His lifetime record was 94-90, with 2.85 ERA and 184 saves. At the time of his retirement only Hoyt Wilhelm pitched in more games than Take. He saved three games for the Pirates in the 1979 World Series vs. Baltimore. Career-wise he had 158 saves in his 12 seasons in Pittsburgh. He led the league in games in 1978, '79, '82 and '87. His 722 games as a Pirate are second only to Elroy Face. He threw with underhanded delivery all his life. Take, like many former professional athletes who played for Pittsburgh teams continue to make his home in the region with his wife and three children.

During the event's awards dinner, Bob Bruce of WPXI-TV will serve as master of ceremonies. Those attending will also be invited to participate in a silent auction featuring approximately 50 packages of prizes such as sports memorabilia, framed artwork and home entertainment equipment.

Proceeds from the 21st annual St. Barnabas Charities Golf Open benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund. In 2007 alone, the Free Care Fund provided more than $5.6 million to patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas who would not otherwise be able to afford their care. Since its founding, the golf open has raised more than $1 million.
