Western Pennsylvania's First Retirement Community to Mark 25 Years
The Village at St. Barnabas Marks Silver Anniversary

Gibsonia, Pa. - June 27, 2005 - It's frequently said that Western Pennsylvania is going gray, a reference to the region's large senior population. This year, the region's gray residents have a reason to celebrate: they're going silver.

The Village at St. Barnabas, Western Pennsylvania's first retirement community is marking its 25th anniversary with an Americana-themed celebration at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15. Festivities for The Village at St. Barnabas, 5850 Meridian Road, will take place in the parkette behind the building and will include comments by those involved in the current and past operations of The Village, a visit by Uncle Sam, a performance by the barbershop quartet "Kids of the 30s," and burial of a time capsule. A picnic-style luncheon will follow. The theme for the event is "God Bless The Village … Celebrating 25 Years of Western Pennsylvania's First Retirement Community."

The Village at St. Barnabas opened in 1980 and includes 252 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Today, it is home to 282 residents and is one of three retirement living options operated by St. Barnabas Health System under the banner of the St. Barnabas Communities. Also included in the St. Barnabas Communities are The Woodlands at St. Barnabas, a neighborhood of 60 spacious carriage homes in Valencia, Butler County, and The Washington Place at St. Barnabas in Richland Township, a 23-unit apartment building for retirees who can rely on hospitality hostesses to maintain their independence. The St. Barnabas Communities are home to slightly more than 400 individuals.

As the flagship of the St. Barnabas Communities, The Village is centered around an indoor mall with extensive amenities, residents don't need to go outdoors. The indoor mall includes a hair salon, post office, full-service restaurant, pub, country store, library, auditorium, chapel, travel office and full-service bank. During the warmer months, residents enjoy extensive outdoor amenities as part of the 303-acre St. Barnabas campus: lush landscaping, walking paths, a parkette with a pond and gazebo, a picnic pavilion, and a putting green. Across the street from The Village is the elegant 350-seat Kean Theatre, open to the public, and offering top-notch entertainment such as plays, musicals and concerts.

St. Barnabas Health System is the largest health care concern of its kind in Pennsylvania and offers service apart from the ordinary in a faith-based, non-denominational setting. Tracing its heritage back to 1900, the system serves approximately 900 inpatients and residents, plus 35,000 outpatients and home care clients. The health system is composed of the St. Barnabas Communities, including The Village at St. Barnabas, The Washington Place at St. Barnabas and The Woodlands at St. Barnabas; St. Barnabas Clinical Services, including St. Barnabas Nursing Home, St. Barnabas Medical Center, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas; the Kean Theatre; and St. Barnabas Charities, the fund-raising arm.
