2.3 Million Pennies Collected for St. Barnabas Patients

Gibsonia, Pa. - Aug. 16, 2005 - 2,317,080 pennies ($23,170.80) were raised to benefit poor and low-income patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas. The total is the result of St. Barnabas Charities' eighth annual Pennies for Patients campaign, which solicited donations of spare change from school children, individuals and businesses. In addition, St. Barnabas Charities and the St. Barnabas/Valencia Woods Auxiliary hosted several fund-raising efforts. The single largest donation came from the students at Curtisville Elementary School, who collected a record-setting 404,412 pennies ($4,041.20), representing 17.4 percent of the total.

The campaign kicked off in February as part of St. Barnabas Charities' yearlong fund-raising efforts. Operating under the motto "Pennies Do Count" this year's collection exceeds last year's previous record of 2,001,068 pennies ($20,010.68). In 2004 alone, the foundation provided more than $5.76 million to patients through the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund. Highlights of the campaign included a segment of the Kean Idol talent show, a fund-raising day of car washes at CleanTown USA, a Dine and Donate program at Eat'n Park Restaurant, a treasure sale, and a Corvette show at Tom Henry Chevrolet.
