Former Speaker of the House will visit May 4, 2006
Gibsonia, Pa. - Jan. 9, 2006 - Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will be the guest speaker and Hance Award recipient when St. Barnabas Charities hosts its annual Founder's Day Celebration on Thursday, May 4, 2006.
Festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a welcoming ceremony at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, 5827 Meridian Road, in which patients will greet Gingrich and he will be presented with a key to the St. Barnabas campus by President William V. Day. Evening activities at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh include a reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a program at 7 p.m. Tickets for the fund-raising dinner are $250 each, available by calling (724) 443-0700, Ext. 258. Proceeds benefit St. Barnabas Charities, which provides more than $5.76 million annually to patients who otherwise could not afford their care at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas. UPMC Health Plan is the signature sponsor of the 2006 Founder's Day fundraising event.
At the conclusion of the dinner program, Day will present Gingrich with the Hance Award, named for St. Barnabas founder Gouverneur Provoost Hance. The award is given each year to a nationally renowned figure who has made a significant impact on Americans and who exemplifies the benevolent traits of Gouverneur Hance. In receiving the award, Gingrich will join the ranks of past honorees, including individuals such as former president Gerald Ford, former first lady Barbara Bush, actor Charlton Heston and TV personality Willard Scott. Upon receiving the Hance Award, Gingrich will deliver an inspiring speech to the 400 attendees expected at the event.
Gingrich is well-known as the architect of the "Contract with America" that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House for the first time in 40 years. After he was elected Speaker in 1995, he disrupted the status quo by moving power out of Washington and back to the American people. Under his leadership, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation, and the first tax cut in 16 years. Today, he is a highly sought after speaker, the author of nine books, chairman of the Gingrich Group, and a news and political analyst for Fox News Channel.
