Pine-Richland Rams Presented with St. Barnabas Medical Center Cup

Gibsonia, Pa. - Aug. 31, 2005 - Quarterback D.J. Cannon of the Mars Planets and wide receiver Pat McClernon of the Pine-Richland Rams were named Most Valuable Players when their teams faced off for the 12th St. Barnabas Medical Center Cup Game on Friday, Aug. 26 at Mars High School Stadium. In a tightly fought game that was not decided until the final seconds, Pine-Richland won 27-25, taking home the Cup trophy for the sixth year in a row.

Cannon was credited with 213 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. McClernon caught two touchdown passes, including the game winner. Out of respect for Mars' excellent play, Pine-Richland coach Clair Altemus had his team members kneel respectfully when they received the Cup trophy from St. Barnabas Medical Center President Douglas W. Day. MVP trophies were presented by Valerie Day Wilden, Assistant Vice President with St. Barnabas Health System, and Dr. Robert R. Rogers, Director of Dental Medicine at St. Barnabas Medical Center.

The St. Barnabas Medical Center Cup Game began in 1992 and was a tradition for five years, until 1998 when Pine-Richland moved into a larger high school football division, which meant that the two teams were no longer scheduled to play each other. But because of strong community support, the backyard brawl was reinstated in 2000.

The St. Barnabas Cup Game was initiated by William V. Day, President of St. Barnabas Health System, as a way to encourage "healthy competition" and pays tribute to the athletes and students of the two school districts in which the health system has facilities.
