St. Barnabas Maintenance Supervisor Named 2005 Hoppy Award Winner
Steve Glenn is Employee of the Year
Gibsonia, Pa. - Jan. 24, 2006 - St. Barnabas Health System has named Steve Glenn as its 2005 Hoppy Award winner. Glenn was nominated by his co-workers and selected for the honor, which is St. Barnabas' equivalent to an Employee of the Year, from among nearly 600 employees.
Glenn is a maintenance supervisor at Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas. He has been employed by St. Barnabas since 1990 where he worked at St. Barnabas Nursing Home and was promoted to assistant maintenance supervisor in 1995. Glenn transferred to Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas in 2005 as Maintenance Supervisor. He lives in Gibsonia and enjoys hunting and fishing with his son, Zachary, 10.
"Steve is very dependable and takes ownership for the buildings he manages," said Karen Russell, administrative director of The Arbors and Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas. "He is a real team player and a hard worker who is very dedicated to the St. Barnabas Health System."
Glenn was presented with the Hoppy Award by St. Barnabas president William V. Day during the 2005 Employee Recognition Program on Thursday, Jan. 19 at The Washington Place's Mount Vernon Restaurant. In presenting him with the Hoppy Award, Day drew comparisons in the work ethic between Glenn and the award's namesake, the late Ralph L. Blessley (1918-1984), a 19-year employee of St. Barnabas Nursing Home. Day also gave him a Pittsburgh Steelers ball cap.
Blessley was a former patient of St. Barnabas who was affectionately known as "Hoppy" because a bone disease had left him with one leg shorter than the other, causing him to have an unusual gait. Going beyond his duties as a maintenance worker, Hoppy raised plants, built a greenhouse and made little tables for patients. He raised $2,300 for St. Barnabas' annual fund-raising event by selling items he made. During his 19 years of employment, he missed less than 10 days' work.
Also during the program, 40 employees were recognized for reaching longevity milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 years of service during 2005. Serving as mistresses of ceremonies were St. Barnabas Nursing Home employees and former Hoppy Award winners Karen Trapp, a registered nurse assessment coordinator nurse, and Mabel Arlene Miller, a housekeeper.
