Heritage Foundation President to be St. Barnabas' Next Hance Award Recipient
Dr. Edwin J. Feulner Jr. to visit Pittsburgh on May 10

Gibsonia, Pa. - Jan. 9, 2007 - Dr. Edwin J. Feulner Jr., president of The Heritage Foundation, Washington's leading public policy organization, will receive the 2007 Hance Award on Thursday, May 10 as part of St. Barnabas Charities' annual Founder's Day Celebration.

The award will be presented by William V. Day, president of St. Barnabas Health System. Founder's Day festivities at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh will include a reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a program at 7 p.m. during which Feulner will give an acceptance speech. Proceeds will benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund, which in 2006 alone provided $5.84 million to patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas who otherwise would not be able to afford their care.

Additional activities being planned for Founder's Day 2007 include a campus visit and a private luncheon. The signature sponsor of the 2007 Founder's Day Celebration is UPMC Health Plan.

St. Barnabas Health System leaders chose Feulner because of his commitment to the cause of freedom around the world and his development and leadership of an organization dedicated to the voice of reason and the underlying values of the Unites States.

As president and co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, Feulner has played a central role in shaping and pushing the conservative agenda for more than three decades. In 1989, President Ronald Reagan conferred the Presidential Citizens Medal upon Feulner, calling him "a leader of the conservative movement." Feulner has helped turn the traditional notion of think tanks as drab centers of serious scholarship on its head. From its very first days in 1973, The Heritage Foundation has been devoted to turning its ideas and ideals into policy. Heritage pioneered the concept of concise messaging and using marketing to promote causes. Heritage's knowledgeable and respected experts are quoted daily in the nation's newspapers, magazines and on television and radio.

Dovetailing with his role in The Heritage Foundation, Feulner has served on a number of national-level commissions and task forces. Among them are the Gingrich-Mitchell Congressional Task Force on U.N. Reform (2004-05), the Congressional Commission on International Financial Institutions ("Meltzer Commission," 1999-2000). He was the vice chairman of the National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform ("Kemp Commission," 1995-96), counselor to vice presidential candidate Jack Kemp (1996), chairman of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy (1982-91), a consultant for domestic policy to President Reagan, and an advisor to several government departments and agencies.

Feulner's books include "Getting America Right," "Leadership for America," "Intellectual Pilgrims," "The March of Freedom," "Conservatives Stalk The House," and "Looking Back." Feulner has studied at the University of Edinburgh, the London School of Economics, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University and Regis University. Feulner's books include "Getting America Right," "Leadership for America," "Intellectual Pilgrims," "The March of Freedom," "Conservatives Stalk The House," and "Looking Back."

Feulner and his wife, Linda Claire Leventhal, reside in Alexandria, Va., and are the parents of two grown children.
