Jake Walker Wins St. Barnabas Medical Center 5K
Race sets record with 910 participants
Gibsonia, Pa. - Aug. 2, 2008 - Jake Walker, 20, of Ellwood City won the St. Barnabas Medical Center 5K Run/Walk today, Aug. 2, 2008, with a time of 15:26. Capturing first place in the women's division was Kacey Gibson, 18 of Neshannock Twp. with a time of 18:45.
TRACO was signature sponsor and UPMC Health Plan was the course sponsor of the event held along Meridian Road. Proceeds from the 5K benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund, which assists patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas who otherwise would not be able to afford their care. Activities at the race included a performance by The Shelley Duff Band and Alex Ammons, 2008 Kean Idol audience choice winner sang the National Anthem. An awards ceremony hosted by Trisha Pittman of WPXI-TV and Shelley Duffy of KDKA radio, food, beverages and prize giveaways.
Both overall winners were crowned with Olympic-tradition laurel wreaths and presented with etched glass trophies. Walker and Gibson joined a record-setting 910 runners and walkers who participated in the event.
The second place overall male finisher was Shane Sarver, 21, of Freeport. His time was 16:12. Third place was David Masse, 24 of Coraopolis with a time of 16:29. The second place overall female finisher was Diana Filtz, 19, of Penn Twp. with a time of 19:09. The third place overall female finisher was Bethany Walker, 18, of Ellwood City with a time of 19:56. All received trophies for their accomplishments.
Eighty-two more trophies were given to the top three winners in the 14 age categories in the men's and women's divisions. The winners for each category are:
