Meet the Team
From the simplest dental cleaning to the most complex
surgery, the staff at The Dental Group at St. Barnabas will treat you with compassion and respect. The
office of highly credentialed specialists and hygienists is directed
by Eric D. Kern, D.M.D., whose has 20 years of experience in dentistry.
Introducing Dr. Keila Gutierrez, periodontist specializing in diseases and conditions of the gums. She will begin seeing patients in July!

Eric D. Kern, D.M.D.
Director of Dental Medicine
Eric D. Kern, DMD, joined St. Barnabas Medical Center as the Director of Dental Medicine in April of 2008.
Dr. Kern is practicing all aspects of general dentistry including examinations, cleanings, fillings, crowns,
and restoring implants, as well as cosmetic dentistry services such as whitening.
Dr. Kern provides cosmetic methods and procedures, including the Venus White® tooth whitening method. He is also certified to provide invisible braces, an excellent option for many adults whose teeth have shifted over time.
Kern has 20 years of experience as a dentist, he most recently was Director of Clinical Operations for the
University of Pittsburgh's faculty practice, University Dental Health Services, a position he held for
15 years. He is a 1984 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown with a bachelor's degree
in biology. In 1988, he earned a degree in dental medicine from the University of Pittsburgh.

Hassan Bakri, D.M.D., M.D.S.
Prosthodontist
Dr. Bakri joined The Dental Group at St. Barnabas
in 2003. He specializes in custom design and fitting of dentures
and dental implants and works with the St. Barnabas team to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients.
Dr. Bakri was previously in private practice in Pittsburgh, and also
formerly associated with Dental Care Partners in Pittsburgh. He was an
assistant professor of the Department of Prosthodontics at the School
of Dental Medicine, University of Pittsburgh. He has a master’s
degree in dental medicine from the University of Pittsburgh, where he
completed a fellowship in implant prosthodontics in 1995. He received
his D.M.D. from the University of Damascus, Syria.

Keila Gutierrez, D.M.D.
Periodontist
Dr. Gutierrez has joined The Dental Group at St. Barnabas as its periodontist, which is a dental specialist who treats diseases and conditions of the gums. She specializes in laser, esthetic and reconstructive periodontics, dental implantology and advanced case management.
Dr. Gutierrez specializes in the latest procedure for treating gum disease, known as "Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure" using the FDA approved PerioLase® MVP-7™ LANAP™ equipment. LANAP™ is a minimally invasive method for treating gum disease with no cutting, no stitching, little to no bleeding and minimal post-operative pain. Dr. Gutierrez is one of only a handful of specialists in Western Pennsylvania providing LANAP™ therapy to patients.
She earned her dental degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey Dental School in Newark and received her certificate in periodontics from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia. She holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey and an associate's degree in liberal arts from the Edward Williams College of Fairleigh Dickinson University.
