Planned Giving

Making a planned gift is not just for those who have wealth or financial expertise, but for anyone with a generous spirit who wants to designate their gifts while they are living. Planned giving includes bequests, charitable gift annuities, trusts and other strategic giving methods, each offering distinct benefits to further St. Barnabas' mission, while providing tax benefits and a potential income source for the donor. Bequests

Estate planning is important regardless of the size of your estate. Proper planning will help you to achieve your objectives, preserve your assets, and provide security for loved ones. Your will is the cornerstone of your estate planning efforts and your most important legal document.

Each year, individuals make a charitable bequest to benefit St. Barnabas Charities. This support has been vital to the continuation of our mission. In 2007 alone, more than $5.6 million in free care was given to our patients. If you are thankful for the care you or your family have received, if you have enjoyed the comfort and surroundings as a resident, or if you believe in our Christian mission of caring, including St. Barnabas Charities in your will may be the best expression of your gratitude.

This is just one example of possible wording, “I give the sum of ____dollars to St. Barnabas Charities, Inc., 5850 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, PA 15044, or its successors for its general exempt purposes.”

We can meet with you and assist you, in strictest confidence, in planning your will. You should also consult with your attorney, who can assist you in drafting your will provision based on your specific needs and desires. For more information and with no obligation, please call Allyson Sveda, Director of Planned Giving at 724-444-5508 or email her at asveda@stbarnabashealthsystem.com.

Gifts of Assets

While cash gifts are important and appreciated by many charitable organizations like St. Barnabas, many donors have found another tax-friendly way to support St. Barnabas through the gifts of assets including but not limited to:

  • Securities
  • Property (real estate and personal property)
  • Retirement Plans

Donors will receive not only a charitable deduction on their income taxes, but also avoid taxes on the capital gains portion of their donated assets.

To learn more about tax benefits with a gift of assets and with no obligation, please call Allyson Sveda, Director of Planned Giving, at 724-444-5508 or email her at asveda@stbarnabashealthsystem.com.

Charitable Gift Annuity

In exchange for an irrevocable gift of at least $5,000, St. Barnabas Charities will make fixed payments for life to the donor(s) age 55 and older. Using rates established by The American Council on Gift Annuities, Charitable Gift Annuities provide the donor(s) with a steady fixed income for life (a significant portion of which is tax-free and provides a better return than CDs) and a charitable tax deduction for a portion of the gift. In addition, donors using a gift of securities to fund a CGA will have the opportunity to defer the capital gains tax. While most donors elect to receive immediate payments, payments may also be deferred to a date of their choice.

Charitable Remainder Trust

Several types of charitable trusts can be used to further St. Barnabas' mission. This is an irrevocable trust in which you or a beneficiary will be paid either a fixed or variable payment for life or a set number of years in exchange for your irrevocable gifts, after which the remaining assets pass to St. Barnabas Charities.

Charitable Lead Trust

These are charitable trusts that work in reverse. St. Barnabas is given fund proceeds for a set time frame. At the end of the pre-determined time, the trust remainder passes to the donor's designated beneficiaries.

Life Insurance Gift

Contribute a life insurance policy and name St. Barnabas Charities as the beneficiary. This type of gift provides a current income tax deduction and possible future deductions through gifts to pay policy premiums.

Retirement Assets Gift

By naming St. Barnabas as the beneficiary of the remaining assets after your lifetime, a donor can avoid the double taxation on IRAs or other employee benefit plans and the heavily taxed gifts to heirs.

Your interest in St. Barnabas Charities is greatly appreciated. If you have questions about gifts or would like to speak confidentially with a development professional, please contact Allyson Sveda, Director of Planned Giving, at 724-444-5508 or email her at asveda@stbarnabashealthsystem.com.

Hance Legacy Society

The Hance Legacy Society was established to honor St. Barnabas' founder, Brother Gouverneur P. Hance, and all those who have made St. Barnabas Charities a part of their legacy through a planned gift. Since 1900, St. Barnabas has been blessed with many benefactors who have shared Brother Hance's vision and have provided an estate gift for the purpose of advancing St. Barnabas' mission:

... Just as the love of Christ urged Brother Gouverneur P. Hance to devote himself to the service of the poor, it impels us to continue service to those in need and to take appropriate actions to assure the continuing viability of our mission through a strong commitment to our programs and associated services.

Joining the Hance Legacy Society:

To become a member, simply notify the St. Barnabas Charities regarding the nature of your bequest or gift plan. Some individuals may choose to share a copy of the specific section of a will or trust document that references the Charities to ensure that their wishes are carried out. All information will be maintained in the strictest confidence. As always, if you choose, you may be an anonymous member.

Please contact Allyson Sveda, Director of Planned Giving, at 724-444-5508 or email her at asveda@stbarnabashealthsystem.com to discuss your financial and philanthropic objectives.
